Carnegie Mellon University

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

The Jared L. Cohon Center on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University is a classic example of the value engineered design capability of Specified Systems. A project that was initially over-specified and significantly over budget was handed over to our team to provide reasonable alternatives that would not diminish the design intent for the project.

Altogether, there was 9100 square feet of Kawneer 1600 Ssytem 1 and 2 curtainwall, 1600 square feet of Kawneer 451T storefront, a CPI Pentglass Canopy, a Wasco Pinnacle 350 sloped skylight system integrated into the curtain wall. Glazing was Guardian SN68 over clear. All fabrication was done in house and installed by our direct workforce.

The complexity of the project was adding steel framing within the curtain wall openings to accommodate the detailed metal panel system. Coordination with other trades and working with typical masonry dimensions was key to the success of the project. The result is a beautifully detailed building on the CMU campus.
